PO‘IPU — The Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort & Spa welcomed a new executive chef this month. Matt Smith joins the resort following positions at several Hyatt hotels. He most recently served as executive chef at the Hyatt Regency Maui, states a news release from the Kaua‘i resort in Po‘ipu.
Smith literally worked his way up from dishwasher and busperson in the Bay Area of California to chef positions after earning top honors at the California Culinary Academy in 1988. Smith worked on the West Coast in various restaurants and hotels from San Diego to Seattle before moving to Maui.
“I am still just as passionate about learning the art of cooking today as I was when I started out, and I love teaching others what I have learned,” Smith states.
As executive chef, Smith oversees 90 culinary staff members in the resort’s restaurants and lounges, as well as banquet events, serving an average of 1,200 meals a day.
“Chef Matt brings a wide variety of culinary experience to our resort, having worked many Hyatt brands including Park Hyatt and Grand Hyatt. He has also been involved as executive chef in the opening of several successful new Hyatt restaurants. We look forward to his contributions to the resort,” Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i General Manager Doug Sears said.
Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort & Spa, set on 50 oceanfront acres, has six restaurants and six lounges, and 602 recently renovated guest rooms.
