A deluge of balls from outside the three-point arc provided the pivot which led to GEK getting a 66-60 win over Ramblas Friday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center as the Men’s 18 and Over league opened its season.
The GEK matchup was one of two games which was settled in overtime as the SupaStars nailed 20 field goals and posted eight of 17 free throws to lock up a 56-53 overtime win over Manny’s Sports ,who turned to the three-ball to stay in contention.
Manny’s rained five three-balls to the SupaStars’ two, but fielded just 16 field goals and ended six of 12 from the charity line.
James Badua sank a game-high 26 points to lead Tropang-L to a 62-52 win over Notorious to open the night, Junior Punzalan and Sammy Perpose adding 11 points apiece to the win.
Robert Papa topped the Notorious shooting with a dozen marks, followed by Allen Calumag and Matt Malaroan each pocketing eight points.
Tab Matsumoto soared for a game-high 27 points to lead the Kings to an 88-28 win over the Westside Pride in the finale, the Pride getting six points apiece from Joey Diez and Reynante Villanueva.
Following Matsumoto, Trent Thompson added 18 points, Olin Claussen came up with 14 marks and Eric Vicoy ended with eight points for the leaders.
In the win by the Kings, coached by Dwayne Mendonca, the Kings nailed 10 three-balls and 27 buckets compared with nothing from outside the three-point line and just 10 field goals for the Pride.
In the GEK win, Aaron Hesapene, leading the scoring with 19 points, came up with four from outside the three-point mark and Hans Reeves, ending with 14 points, was joined by Gilbert Castro for two treys apiece, one coming in overtime to nail the win.
Ian Clements, ending 3-for-3 at the charity line, topped the Ramblas’ scoring with 19 points, eclipsing Hesapene’s performance.
Brendan McDaniels and Kaina Makua finished with 16 and 14 points, respectively, for the Ramblas.
Spam Lindsey topped the Manny’s Sports win on a game-high 20 points followed by Brad Coloma and Mike Lindsey lending 10 points apiece.
Sam Pomele topped the SupaStars’ effort with 15 points followed by Gabe Legacy adding 11 points and Dustin Dillberg ending with 10 points.
Three games are on tap today at the Kapa‘a High School gym when Hanakila meets the Kaua‘i Ballers starting at 6 p.m., followed by GEK tangling with the Kings at 7 p.m. Manny’s Sports meets the Ramblas at 8 p.m.
