WAILUA — Daezsa Tomas fired a one-under par 35 on the back nine Friday and an even par 36 on the front nine Saturday to finish the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation qualifying golf tournament with a two-day total 151 (73-78) on Saturday at Wailua Golf Course.
The total was four strokes better than teammate Taylor Viquelia, a consistent leader in the girls division through the season, who finished the qualifying tournament with a 155 (79-76), coming on strong in the final round.
Tomas’ 36-hole total earned her the 2012 KIF Individual Girls Champion title.
Tomas and Viquelia are part of the Kaua‘i High School girls golf team, which was awarded the 2012 KIF Girls Team Champion title, the four girls, Tomas, Viquelia, Janae Park (103-104-207) and Sabrina Barrier (113-115-228) advancing to the David S. Ishii Foundation Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Girls State Golf Championships at the Wailua Golf Course in two weeks.
Na‘ea Oda of Kapa‘a High School, firing a sizzling four-over par 76 during the opening round, ended with a two-day total 157 (76-81) to qualify for the remaining open individualist spot in the state tournament.
She bested Waimea’s girls’ leader Mariah Paiste (84-87-171) and Kawena Warren (98-99-197).
Saturday’s tournament resembled the LPGA tournament being played on O‘ahu, as a good-sized gallery hovered over the foursome comprising the tournament leaders of Viquelia, Tomas, Oda and Paiste.
Pono Tokioka, the Kaua‘i boys’ leader, fired a consistent two-over par on both days on the boys’ course to finish with a two-day total of 148 (74-74) and claim the 2012 KIF Individual Boys Champion title.
Tokioka’s score was four strokes ahead of Kapa‘a’s leader Kenji Miyata (77-75-152), who was eclipsed by Tokioka during last week’s KIF final round by the same four strokes — the margin of victory for the Red Raider boys.
Miyata earned one of two open individualists spots for the boys, being joined by Kapa‘a senior Jordon Guerrero (82-78-160) for the other open spot, edging out fellow Warrior Bryden Salvador (85-78-163) by three strokes.
Tokioka is part of the Kaua‘i boys team that earned the 2012 KIF Team Boys Champion title and includes Braeden Robley (85-81-166), Reyn Morioka (73-86-159), Jamie Amimoto (85-83-168) and Kai Adachi (80-82-162).
Other Red Raiders participating in the tournament included Vance Tokita (97-96-193), Jordan Serrano (92-85-177) and Jeremy Felizardo (102-121-223).
Warrior golfers participating in the tournament included Mitchell Alves (95-99-194), Kawika Wellington (94-87-181), Landen Ishida (87-89-176), Tyler Carvalho (139-146-285) and Anthony Aiwohi (96-94-190).
