Green gets No. 5 seed at state tennis

Waimea High School’s Lani-Rae Green is the only Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation tennis player to receive a seed in the Carlsmith Ball Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association State Tennis Championships that start Thursday at Central O‘ahu Regional Park.

Green, finishing the KIF qualifying tournament as the No. 1 girls singles over teammate Brittney Barreira, is from the Menehune girls team, which was declared co-champions with the Kaua‘i High School girls team, according to Donna Umetsu, a Waimea team mother.

Barreira opens the state girls singles at 8:30 a.m. Thursday against Alexis Agustin.

Green, who also finished the KIF Track and Field Championships with a consideration run in the Girls 400-yard run, is pitted against Alicia Ballesteros starting at 9:30 a.m.

Ryan Perez, the No. 1 boys singles player from Island School, opens against No. 5 seeded Spencer Travalino at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

Christopher Ajimura of the KIF boys champion Waimea team, finishing as the No. 2 boys singles in the KIF qualifying tournament, opens against Mitchell Miyashiro starting at 11 a.m.

The Kaua‘i boys singles team of Jerik Centeno and Matthew Kanna, finishing as the top boys doubles team, opens against the team of Finn Gallagher and Caelen McHale of Kona starting at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

The second-place boys doubles team of Radcliff Floria and Kevin Jian of Kaua‘i opens at 11 a.m. against the team of Ty Tanaka and Calvin Lee.

The girls doubles team of Jennifer Grady and Shay Orial, finishing the KIF qualifying tournament as tops, is scheduled to open against the team of Leisha Ishikawa and Shayla Kushi starting at 10:30 a.m.

Rachel Umetsu and Annalissa Hartsell of Waimea, finishing the KIF qualifying tournament as runners-up,  open at 11:30 a.m. against Katie Yamamoto and Shannon Yamamoto of Punahou.
