LIHU‘E — Mothers will be on the minds of many Kaua‘i people this weekend as Mother’s Day is celebrated Sunday.
Topping the list of gifts for mothers, flowers, dinners and jewelry are among the items most sought-after, according to a radio report this week.
Family Flower Farms opened its week-long tent on the lawn of the Kaua‘i Museum Monday following the annual Kaua‘i Museum May Day Lei Contest Saturday.
“It’s a little late, but we will make do,” said Lynn Muramoto Tuesday while setting out more new samples. “This year, we have a miniature scented orchid and a phalaenopsis which is a reverse of one which was introduced during Valentine’s Day.”
Live blooming orchids make ideal floral gifts for Mother’s Day because they last for a while, said Fely Sams of Orchid Alley in downtown Kapa‘a.
Her favorite is a phalaenopsis, commonly known as the moth orchid because of its form, in a mottled mixture of yellow with purple spots which are on the verge of brown.
Phalaenopsis orchids are unique because the varieties keep on blooming, Sams said.
“When the original blooms are spent, you can try cutting the stem just above the first node,” she said. “Sometimes, the orchid will send out another smaller spray from the node. It’s about luck. Not all of them do, but a lot of them keep flowering this way.”
Orchid Alley will be part of the Kaua‘i Orchid Society’s Mother’s Day Show and Sale which opens today at Kukui Grove Center from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m., and then again on Saturday from 9 a.m. Friday morning is reserved for setting up and judging the show specimens.
“We were taking orders for Mainland shipments up until Wednesday,” Sams said. “Now that it’s over, we’ll concentrate on our mothers here. I think I’ll go over to the Kukui Grove show this year.”
