KAPA‘A — Kapa‘a High School basketball standouts Lance Miyashiro and Makana Aki set the pace for the Kaua‘i Ballers in a 52-47 win over the hard-pressing Manny’s Sports Thursday night at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapa‘a.
Miyashiro, a key player for the Kapa‘a Warriors during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation basketball season, finished with a game-high 25 points, including a last-second bucket from a cross-court pass to lay claim to the victory. He ended 1-for-2 at the free-throw line and bucketed one of two attempts from outside the three-point line in his performance.
Aki finished 2-for-2 from outside the three-point line and netted four buckets in his 14-point contribution to the Ballers.
Willis Batol finished with six points. Noa Colipano and Koa Colipano added five points apiece in the win.
Manny’s Sports, pulling to within three points in the final minute of play, could not defend on Miyashiro’s long cross-court bomb and settled on the five-point deficit. Manny’s Sports was led by Brian Andres and Spam Lindsey with eight points apiece, Andres launching two final-period treys in the comeback effort.
Kaleo Perez and Kiah Imai each added six points, followed by Bradley Coloma and Manny Pescador, each pocketing four points. Mike Lindsey finished with three and a pair from Junnel Calpito rounded out the effort.
Hanakila’s Brison Nacapuy finished with four three-balls — three of those in the final quarter — as the team coached by Philip Baclayon held off Tropang-L 78-65 in the nightcap.
Nacapuy finished with 25 points followed by Marlon Cudiamat adding 21 points to set the pace for Hanakila. Keliikoa Baclayon, Mark Roslin and James Paik each added eight points in the win.
J.R. Punzalan set the pace for Tropang-L with 18 points, followed by James Badua with 16 points, 11 coming in the first half when Tropang-L held an 18-17 lead at the end of the opening quarter, its only lead of the night. Benjie Coma added 12 points and Jay Serapio rounded out the leaderboard on 10 points.
The Men’s 18 and Over league returns to the floor Tuesday night at the Kapa‘a High School gym with a trio of games starting at 6 p.m. when Notorious takes on Manny’s Sports. The Kings meet Hanakila in a 7 p.m. showdown and Tropang-L rounds out the night against the Kaua‘i Ballers starting at 8 p.m.
