KOLOA — The first day of practice for the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League is Aug. 1, but Koloa Pop Warner Association members and some of its players are already getting ready.
On Sunday, they spent the greater part of the day power washing, cleaning and re-arranging the storage facility at Anne Knudsen Park in Koloa.
“We’re currently accepting registration for football players and cheer squad members for all of the divisions,” said Tara Fernandez, president of the Koloa Pop Warner Association.
“We’re also taking registration from people who are interested in coaching in any of the divisions, football or cheer.”
The KPWFL will feature the Mitey Mite, Junior PeeWee and Junior Midget divisions for the 2012 season. The Mitey Mite program is open to youngsters aged 7, 8 and 9 years old; the Junior PeeWee program is open to keiki ages 9, 10 and 11 years old and the Junior Midget program open to youngsters aged 10 through 13 years old.
Both divisions will feature tackle football and cheer squads.
Interested people can pick up application forms and return completed forms at the Koloa Pop Warner facility on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 6 p.m. through the end of May, Fernandez said.
In June, applications can be picked up at the Koloa Pop Warner facility on Tuesdays only from 5 to 6 p.m.
Practice for the 2012 season starts islandwide on August 1 and in Koloa, will start at 4:30 p.m.
“This is the 50th anniversary of Pop Warner Football on Kaua‘i,” Fernandez said. “We are already planning on what to do with the float for the Jamboree which starts the season. Right now, we have Stoop Shimogawa, a longtime football official and Pop Warner official, agreeing to be on our float.”
