WAILUA — Kaua‘i-based Unlimited Construction Services won two first place awards in the statewide General Contractors Association Build Hawai‘i 2012 competition.
The awards came for the Wailua Cane Haul Bridge Widening project and for the new Safeway store on Beretania Street on O‘ahu. The company also received second place awards for Kalanipu‘u at Kaua‘i Lagoons, and for the Kukui‘ula Cottage model home in Po‘ipu.
The $29 million bridge project was to install a new 510-foot two-lane Acrow panel steel bridge to help traffic flow on Kaua‘i’s Eastside. They placed the deck on top of the old, narrow one-lane bridge once used to haul sugar cane across the Wailua River.
The project provided about 200 jobs.
The $20 million Safeway project was to build a grocery store and three retail spaces, with another standalone building on a 3-acre parcel near Pi‘ikoi Street on O‘ahu.
It was completed six weeks ahead of schedule in just 10 months.
“These awards are a testament to our fabulous, hard-working team of employees and subcontractors who all worked well as one team with the architects and project owners,” said Jay Manzano, Unlimited’s president. “We are grateful that we’ve had work during these hard economic times.”
