LIHU‘E — A Kapa‘a man got a weekend in jail and five years probation for drug charges Thursday in 5th Circuit Court.
Gregory Allen Freeman, 48, changed his plea to guilty of third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug on Feb. 14. The state agreed to drop the remaining charges stemming from a Dec. 26 arrest.
County Second Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Samuel Jajich said Freeman has no record in Hawai‘i but has burglary, vandalism and liquor convictions in California in the 1980s. He recommended probation and community service.
State Deputy Public Defender Christian Enright said that with a minimal record and no prior felonies, that Freeman now recognizes his addiction issues and is taking responsibility.
Freeman apologized to the court and said he would take responsibility and accept the terms of sentencing.
The dropped charges include promotion of a controlled substance near a school, drug paraphernalia, second-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, and fourth-degree promotion of a harmful drug.
Chief Judge Randal Valenciano said that one of the charges was for selling marijuana from his home, which is near a school.
He denied the motion to defer the acceptance of the guilty plea and possibly clear the conviction from his record after successful completion of probation.
