O‘AHU — The top-seeded Waimea Menehune softball team advanced to the semi-finals of the DataHouse Softball Division II State Championships with a 12-8 victory over Waipahu Thursday evening on O‘ahu.
The Menehune wasted no time getting on the board with three runs in the first inning and two in the second. The Menehune added runs in the third and fourth innings before breaking out for four in the sixth.
Entering the seventh inning with a 12-4 lead, Waimea managed to stop a late-game Waipahu rally at four runs to end the game at 12-8.
The Menehune will face Kalaheo today at 3 p.m.
Also advancing to the semi-finals on the bottom half of the bracket was the Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders. After a 14-9 first round win over St. Francis, the Red Raiders knocked off No. 3 Kamehameha with a 12-2 win.
The Red Raiders square off against the winner of the Nanakuli/Waialua quarterfinal game today at 1 p.m.
The unseeded Waimea boys volleyball team almost pulled off an upset of No. 4 Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy in the HHSAA New City Nissasn Boy Volleyball State Championships Thursday on O‘ahu.
After dropping the first set 25-17, the Menehune regrouped with win the second 24-26. The two teams split the next two, with HPA winning the third set 25-17 and the Menehune claiming the fourth 25-17. The Menehune upset attempt came to a halt in the deciding fifth set, with HPA claiming the match with a 15-8 set win.
Kaili Shumacher-Lagundio led the Menehune with 22 kills while Mark Kanahele added 14. Setter Jonathan Tangalin had 48 assists, two aces and two blocks.
The Menehune will play at 5 p.m. today in the first round of the consolation bracket.
