HANAPEPE — Two missed point-after plays gave the Waimea Blue a 28-24 edge over Waimea White Friday during the Blue-and-White football game at Hanapepe Stadium.
Thirty of the Menehune eligible players were broken into the two squads that provided some nice play and excitement for the staunch group of supporters who paid $10 at the gate in exchange for the annual spring game and a hearty chicken plate dinner.
Play format included 25 downs by Blue, play starting on the Blue 20-yard line for the first quarter. This was followed by 25 downs by White for the second quarter, the format being followed for the third and fourth quarters with Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation football officials keeping an eye on the action, announced by Arthur Brun.
Hazard McDougall had the sole quarterback responsibility, running for one touchdown and passing for all of the remaining scores.
Following a nice drive by Blue to inside the White territory, the drive faltered and on a fourth-and-long situation, McDougall kept the ball and broke out for a 40-yard score to open the scorebooks.
With literally ticks remaining in the opening period, Kyren Rapacon of Blue found 20 yards for the second score, the point-after play sealed when Acetyn Emayo snagged a McDougall pass for the 14-0 lead at the end of the period.
Exchanging possession, White drove hard and hit paydirt when McDougall found Cy Corona on a 19-yard hit in the end zone, Corona literally wide open and gathering in the aerial late in the quarter.
A repeat of the play, this time for 20 yards, saw Corona tap paydirt, both point-after plays being snuffed for the 14-12 Blue bulge at the half.
Rapacon broke out for a 73-yard score to anounce the second half, Emayo’s point-after run moving the scoreboard to a 22-12 showing.
McDougall hit Nohili Kahepu‘u for the final Blue score late in the quarter, Kahepu‘u collecting the pass and literally cart-wheeling into the end zone after being defended on by Corona.
Mixing things up, White got on the board when Tyson Banasihan found paydirt on a two-yard charge, McDougall’s PAT pass going incomplete.
White notched its final touchdown when McDougall found Issaiah Dela Cruz on an 18-yard aerial hit, the point-after failing for the 28-24 final.
Kapa‘a and Kaua‘i high schools had played their spring games earlier in the month, a week prior to graduation.
