LIHU‘E — Young bicycle riders had an opportunity to test their bike riding skills, learn new skills and earn prizes during the annual Keiki Bike Rodeo hosted by the State Farm Insurance and the East Kaua‘i Lions Club Saturday at King Auto Center.
“We’ve been doing the bicycle clinics for the past 10 years at different sites,” said Darrellyn Lemke, agent for State Farm.
“But this is the first year all three State Farm agents have gotten together to host the event with the Lions Club.”
Lemke was joined by State Farm agent Mike Martinez, whose office is in the Kaua‘i Village Shopping Center, and Eric Kaneda, whose office is on Haleko Road.
Young riders in kindergarten through grade 5 negotiated through an obstacle course which tested their knowledge of bicycle-riding skills in a fun atmosphere, many of them getting high-fives from parents, relatives and Lions upon completion of the course.
Lions spread out throughout the course as monitors and recorders, while others worked traffic control to prevent motorists from entering the bicycle course.
Following the course, riders had an opportunity to win prizes such as new bicycle helmets and other items through a random drawing.
Adults accompanying the young riders filled in registrations, which were entered in a drawing for a new bicycle, one for the girls and one for the boys.
“This year State Farm paid for one bicycle and the Lions Club paid for the other bicycle so we could have one for the boys and one for the girls,” Lemke said.
Antonia Azocar walked off with the girls’ bicycle while Andrew Galiza came running up from the course when he discovered he earned the boys’ bicycle, getting help from his many friends in adjusting to the new set of wheels.
