HONOLULU — Gov. Neil Abercrombie on Tuesday announced the release of more than $37.5 million for various Capital Improvement Projects that address storm-related damage to highways and roadways, and to implement transportation safety improvements statewide.
A total of $22 million will be used to address damages that the heavy storm in early March caused to highways and roadways, including drainage structures and landslides, primarily on Kaua‘i and O‘ahu, but extending to Maui and Molokai, according to a state press release.
“It was necessary for our state Department of Transportation to act decisively in March to reopen roadways like Kuhio Highway on Kaua‘i and elsewhere following severe rainfall.” Abercrombie said. “These funds help sustain reliable transportation and commerce, while generating jobs for local people.”
Lihu‘e Airport will receive $2.5 million for construction work at the former Ahukini Landfill, to control debris and soil erosion from entering the ocean.
Other airports statewide that will receive funding include Maui’s Kahului ($7.91 million) and Kapalua ($1.65 million), Honolulu International Airport ($157,000) and Molokai Airport ($4,000).
Maui, O‘ahu and Big Island will receive an additional $3.37 million for general traffic improvements.
“Leveraging available federal funds, these Capital Improvement Projects are examples of state government working quickly and efficiently to maintain Hawai‘i’s transportation infrastructure,” Abercrombie said.
