LIHU‘E — County wastewater officials anticipate that Kalapakī Beach will remain closed until at least tomorrow afternoon due to a sewage spill that occurred last night at the Lihu’e Wastewater Treatment Plant on Ninini Point Street above Kaua‘i Lagoons Golf Course.
“Our main focus at this point is public health and safety,” stated County Engineer Larry Dill. “We understand and apologize for the inconvenience to our residents, visitors and surrounding businesses, and we are working diligently to get the beach reopened as soon as it is prudent to do so.”
An as-yet unknown amount of partially treated sewage flowed from off the treatment plant property across Kaua‘i Lagoons and into the storm drain system that leads into Kalapaki Bay, according to a county news release.
County Public Works officials are asking people to stay out of the water at Kalapaki Bay at least until tomorrow afternoon as crews test water samples to determine water quality.
County crews are working with the state Department of Health and will follow the department’s direction in the management of the sewage spill.
The spill occurred between process units at the plant, due to a partial electrical failure.
