LAWA‘I — The stage for Sunday is already set in Lawa‘i: Good food, a beautiful tropical setting, fine art and a bit of casual chatting with some of Kaua‘i’s most prolific women artists.
This Sunday, Patrice Pendarvis, Caylin Spear, Donia Lilly, Lilian de Mello, Dawn Lundquist and Marionette Taboniar will be discussing their creative process and some may even demonstrate their technique to those who attend the 4th annual Summer Fine Art Festival at the two National Tropical Botanical Gardens in Lawa‘i.
“I enjoy organizing these fine art festivals at the gardens because they give the community a great way to connect with the artists in a beautiful environment, they educate about art through artists demonstrations and ‘talk story’ with the artists,” Taboniar said.
“The grounds of the botanical gardens in Lawa‘i are so beautiful, it just makes us Women Artists of Kaua‘i happy to be able to set up on the grounds of the garden and share our art works with all of you nature lovers visiting the gardens,” said de Mello, an award-winning nature and fine arts photographer.
What else could you want? If your answer is to own a piece of these women’s artistic creations, you got it — their art, in a variety of styles, will be for sale.
All works are original and will include paintings, prints, photography, drawings, sculptures, pottery, mixed media, metal, glass, fabric and textile art and digital art.
And the environmental kick is that a portion of the proceeds will support the gardens.
Taboniar said the event gives the artists an opportunity to “give back to the community” through the donations.
“I will be offering my nature and fine art photography and feel grateful to be able to help the botanical gardens with our donations,” de Mello said.
Live Hawaiian music will be provided by Mahea and Friends, from 10 a.m. to noon, and Dr. Matthew Miller will soothe event attendees with his relaxing guitar music from noon to 2 p.m.
Chalupa’s Mexican Food will also be there offering authentic tamales, burritos, tacos, enchiladas and more.
The art day will be put together by the gardens and the Women Artists of Kaua‘i, a group of about 20 talented wahine.
“One of our members, Donia Lilly, just won the Best in Show in the Pastel Artists of Hawai‘i Annual Members Show for her painting ‘Rembrandt’s Working Man,’ and she will be at our upcoming art festival,” Taboniar said. “So please stop by her booth and meet this award- winning artist.”
The mission of the NTBG is to enrich life through discovery, scientific research, conservation and education by perpetuating the survival of plants, ecosystems and cultural knowledge of tropical regions.
“I would like to thank the staff at the gardens for providing us with such a lovely venue to have our art festivals twice a year, once in June and again in December,” Taboniar said.
Women Artists of Kaua‘i promotes the works of female artists on the island while raising funds for local charities on Kaua‘i.
