Youth living in Kekaha who are interested in participating in the first Kaua‘i NBC Basketball Camp, set for June 12 through 16, are eligible for scholarships, said Josh Burton, the Kaua‘i camp coordinator.
The scholarships are available to boys and girls between 9 and 18 years old who live in Kekaha. The scholarships are being made available through a grant from the Kekaha Host Community Benefits Program.
Bus transportation from the Kekaha Neighborhood Center to Island School is included in the scholarships.
The W of Kaua‘i, a nonprofit youth organization, is hosting this first basketball camp.
“The W was founded on the belief that youth sports can make a positive impact on a child’s life,” said Burton in a release. “In sports, you often hear the phrase ‘The W,’ which refers to an individual or team winning a game. Our goal is to take that phrase one step further and to equip youth with the skills needed to not only getting The W on the scoreboard, but to get The W in the game of life.”
Burton said NBC Camps founder and president Fred Crowell dreamed of a basketball camp which would train athletes to win both on and off the court.
“He wanted a program which would provide the best basketball training, create an atmosphere of encouragement, hard work, respect and compassion, and teach athletes to compete not only physically, but with their hearts and minds,” Burton said.
One hundred of Kaua‘i’s youth will be improving their basketball skills as well as gaining valuable life skills which they can use to be a better person at home, in school and in the community this summer.
“Our goal is to provide Kaua‘i’s youth with the necessary tool to reach their full potential in life,” Burton said.
