LIHU‘E — The Department of Water announced Tuesday a decrease in its cost of power adjustment rate effective July 1.
The new power adjustment cost of $0.28 per thousand gallons is a $.03 decrease from the prior fiscal year and will cover the difference in energy costs incurred and the energy cost allowance included in the water rates during the past fiscal year.
In the future, if energy costs increase, the cost of power adjustment will also result in an increase in the cost of power adjustment.
Energy costs are a significant percentage of the department’s expenses. Last fiscal year, energy costs came to $3.1 million or 17 percent of operating costs, while water sales revenue totaled $19.8 million.
