Kings and G.E.K. in 18 Over hoops title fight

set the No. 2 seed SupaStars, 50-49 to set the stage for the title fight, Friday night at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center for the Men’s 18 and Over basketball league.

Facing G.E.K. on the other side, the top seeded Kings defeated the Kaua‘i Ballers, 78-63 during the playoffs, Friday night in Kalaheo.

The G.E.K., playing catchup for three quarters, shut down the SupaStars, 12-6 in the final period to wrap up the one-point victory behind Aaron Hesapene netting 14 points, including three treys, one coming in the pivotal fourth quarter. Mike Sanders finished with 13 points and James Talich added 10 points, including a pair from outside the three-point arc. Hans Reeves added the sixth trey in the go-ahead fourth period with Afa Acoba and Kawika Smith sparking the defense.

Cody Dolor fired all three treys for the SupaStars, including one in the first, second and third periods when the SupaStars held a 15-8 lead over G.E.K. at the end of the first period, 26-22 lead at the half, and 43-38 lead at the end of three periods.

Sean Allen, one of the big men underneath, topped the SupaStar scoring on a dozen points with Dustin Dillberg complementing the effort on 10 points, the pair key to SupaStar boards and cleaning the paint.

Tab Matsumoto fired nine of the 11 three-point buckets by the Kings, including five in the fourth period, finishing with 36 points to lead the win.

Trent Thompson added 14 points on five buckets with Justin Sparks and Tony Brewer adding eight points apiece. Axefaio Brewer finished with seven points, including a trey in the second period.

Koa Colipano topped the Kaua‘i Ballers effort on 14 points with Makana Aki finishing with 11 points.

The Kaua‘i Ballers square off against the SupaStars in the league’s third place battle starting at 6 p.m., Friday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center with the Kings and G.E.K. going for the title starting at 7 p.m.
