LIHU‘E — Although the 2012 Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation football season in only a couple of months away, a trio of Waimea standouts from the 2011 season have committed to compete for positions at the next level.
Waimea head coach Keali‘i Aguiar said that Devan Banasihan Kenney, Keoni Ana and Brian Ceballos will all compete as walk-ons at schools in Oregon.
Banasihan Kenney and Ana will both attend Eastern Oregon University in La Grande while Ceballos will compete at Western Oregon University in Monmouth.
At Eastern Oregon, the Mountaineers will get a running back in Banasihan Kenny and a KIF All-Star defensive back in Ana.
“Pound for pound, (Banasihan Kenny) was the toughest running back during our coaching tenure, thus far,” Aguiar said. “Keoni was never one to be loud. He let his play speak for itself. Keoni’s work ethic and abilities will definitely allow him to find a spot on EOU’s roster.”
Aguiar said the WOU Wolves will be getting an all-around player in Ceballos. Before he suffered a season-ending injury in the fourth game of the season, Ceballos was Waimea’s starting tight end, backup outside linebacker and full-time starter on special teams.
“Brian fought and scrapped for everything he got on the field,” Aguiar said. “In the classroom Brian excelled, and we never had to worry. His drive and passion is what will make him a success at Western.”
