HANAMA‘ULU — A Hanama‘ulu man has been arrested on first-degree arson charges after he reportedly set fire to his home Sunday night, according to the Kaua‘i Police Department.
Andrew Sarita, 23, is being held in police cellblock in lieu of $20,000 bail.
Officers were dispatched to the home on Ho‘ohana Street shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday, after receiving a report of a man armed with a knife who was setting fires inside his home.
Police were first on the scene and took custody of the suspect, then secured the surrounding area.
Firefighters from the Lihu‘e station arrived at the burning one-story home at 10:17 p.m. The blaze was extinguished by 11 p.m.
The fire was contained to the bedroom, where it appears to have originated, according to fire inspectors. Damage to the structure and its content is estimated at $60,000.
The suspect’s father reported minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
The incident remains under investigation.
