WAILUA — Daeza Tomas fired a three-under par 69 Saturday to lead all golfers in the 2012 Chica Ishii Golf Tournament which played Saturday and Sunday at the Wailua Golf Course.
Hosted by the Kaua‘i Junior Golf Association, the 54-hole stroke play tournament will wrap up Saturday with the first groups expected to tee off around 11 a.m.
Although no scores were available from the Sunday play, Tomas, a strong contender for the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girls golf program, held her own Sunday.
Na‘ea Oda, finishing the David Ishii Foundation/Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state girls championships in sixth place, ended the day with an 86 in the Girls 15-18 division, second to Tomas.
Keilyn Ing ended the Saturday round with an 84, two strokes ahead of Oda, and on Sunday, even helped Oda clear a wind-toppled bough of an ironwood tree on the No. 9 fairway after Oda’s second shot landed in the folds of the fallen branch.
Kenji Miyata, ending the HHSAA boys state championships in sixth place, topped the Boys 15-18 division, firing an even-par 72 Saturday.
Sherry Amimoto, who was tracking the score of her son Jamie Amimoto Sunday, noted Miyata was not having as good a round on the second day as he did Saturday, but was not in any position to be bumped from the lead.
Bryden Salvador finished with a 76 followed by KC Loo (82), Reyn Morioka (84), Amimoto (84), Tyler Barton (97), Kai Adachi (101) and Kawika Wellington (103).
Trevor Kua, whose older brother TJ copped golf honors at the University of Hawai‘i, topped the Boys 13-14 division, firing an 82 followed by Rilen Loo (86), Keith Jose (89), Logan Gibson (91), and Nathaniel Dama (106).
Hi‘ilani Alana topped the Girls 13-14 division with a 92 followed by Samantha Nichols at 105.
Reece Valencia carried the Boys 11-12 at 96 while Salisa Pegeder ended with a 111 in the Girls 11-12.
Christian Ganir topped the Boys 10 and Under division with a 95 followed by Mason Gibson at 100 and James Pratt and Niki Upson tied at 107.
