KAPA‘A — Chester Dikilato and Koa Colipano netted 13 and 12 points, respectively to lead the Kaua‘i Ballers to a 68-63 edge over Notorious Tuesday night at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapa‘a during the first of three games played in the Men’s 18 and Over basketball league.
Allen Calumag finished with a game-high 19 points to lead the Notorious effort, Calumag bucketing three field goals and getting help from Bryan Domingo with a bucket and a trey as Notorious took a 23-16 lead at the end of the opening period.
Kainoa Colipano, Lance Miyashiro, Dikilato and Keali‘i Colipano came back with two buckets apiece in the second period and Kekoa Colipano added a bucket and a charity pair as the Kaua‘i Ballers outgunned Notorious, 20-9 to take a 36-32 edge at the half.
In a battle of the long ball in the third period, Dikilato led the Kaua‘i Ballers with three from outside the three-point arc with Kekoa and Kainoa Colipano each adding one to lead a 21-19 edge over Notorious who saw Calumag, Matt Palaroan and Robert Papa nailing treys and Calumag helping the effort with a bucket as well.
Kekoa Colipano iced the Kaua‘i Ballers’ win in the final stanza, dropping another trey while Keali‘i Colipano added three buckets.
Notorious answered with a Chad Koga three-ball in addition to Palaroan dropping three buckets and Calumag finishing with a charity pair in the effort.
James Badua lit up the scoreboards with 29 points to give Tropang-L a 63-61 edge over G.E.K. in the second outing, G.E.K. outgunning Tropang-L in the first period, 17-11 on three-balls from Hans Reeves, Aaron Hesapene and Alden Lahip.
J.R. Punzalan, who finished with 20 points in the Tropang-L edge, fired up a three ball along with Jonathan Anacleto, brother of Kaua‘i High School guard Casey Anacleto, with Badua and Jay Serapio adding buckets to give Tropang-L an 18-10 second quarter for a 29-27 edge at the half.
Following a third period deadlock and half of their team in foul trouble, G.E.K. battled through the fourth stanza, coming up short at the buzzer.
Mike Sanders, finishing with six bucket and a 3-6 showing at the charity stripe, led the G.E.K. effort with 15 points followed by Reeves at 12 points and Hesapene being held to 10 points.
Trent Thompson finished with 10 buckets for 20 points to lead the Kings to a 72-46 showing over Ramblas in the nightcap, Ramblas’ Kaina Makua scoring a game-high 29 points.
Tab Matsumoto launched five treys and added a bucket in his 17 points followed by Olin Claussen adding 12 points on three buckets and a pair from outside the three-point line. Justin Starks ended with 10 points on five buckets while Eric Vicoy and Ruben DelaCruz each drained three-balls. Axefaio Brewer ended with three and Tony Brewer added four points, spreading the Kings’ scoring to all players who took the floor.
Following Makua’s lead, the Ramblas got eight points from Brendan McDaniels and Scott Rabago, the Ramblas being limited to just five players taking the court.
The Men’s 18 and Over league play three games at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center, Friday starting at 6 p.m. and take to the floor Tuesday for three games at the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapa‘a starting at 6 p.m. when Westside Pride meets Manny’s Sports followed by G.E.K. going up against Hanakila at 7 p.m. The Ramblas close out the night against the SupaStars starting at 8 p.m.
