The saying “It’s not over until it’s over” holds true for racers in the Nawiliwili Yacht Club (NYC) Horse and Pony series as Ed Tschup, piloting the Papa‘au “pony,” or topper, took a huli, or spill, at the No. 5 Green Can turnaround.
Papa‘au, with the huli, finished with seven points, tying Speedy whose pony finished first during the NYC Horse and Pony Series, Race No. 2.
Papa‘au finished in good position following the horse race, ending in second by 24 seconds below OZone who set the pace with a 28:22 elapsed time in light air, correcting to 28:25 PHRF while Papa‘au, finishing third overall on a 30:29 elapsed sail, corrected to 28:49 PHRF.
The pony pack went out tight, the light air forcing the bunch compared to last week when the field spread out over two tacks. The pack stayed together until Tschup took the huli at the can, the remaining ponies coming in within tenths of seconds to each other, said Sharon Gibson of the NYC Race Committee.
Speedy, crossing the line in the Horse race on a 31:47 elapsed sail, corrected to 31:50 PHRF for fifth place, but with its first pony finish, was able to surpass Papa‘au at six points for
the race.
Fast Company, finishing on a 29:06 elapsed sail, corrected to 29:09 PHRF and with its runner-up pony finish, ended with six points, tying Speedy.
Bonjolea, crossing the horse finish line on a 30:29 elapsed sail, corrected to 29:19 PHRF for fourth finish and combined with its third finish in the pony race, topped the combined totals with four points.
With two races remaining, Papa‘au continues to hold the lead in the PHRF Open and Monohull classes with 10 points, challenged by OZone and Fast Company, both holding 11 points. Bonjolea is in third at 12 points followed by Speedy at 16 points.
In the Club class, Bonjolea, correcting to 25:28 Club for top honors in Race No. 2, holds the lead at nine points challenged by Papa‘au at 10 points. Fast Company (12 points), OZone (13 points) and Speedy (16 points) round out the field.
The public is invited to view the races Thursday when the NYC Race Committee holds its third of four races with the first flags flying at 5 p.m.
Best viewing for the Horse and Pony series is the jetty wall area of Nawiliwili Harbor.
