LIHU‘E — The Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank board of directors and volunteers will conduct its Summer Food Drive Day Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at six different locations, said Kelvin Moniz, the KIFB director of food resources.
Food, non-perishable canned goods or monetary contributions can be dropped off at the Kukui Grove Center, the Big Kmart, Ishihara Market in Waimea, Sueoka Store in Koloa, Safeway in Kapa‘a and Foodland at the Princeville Shopping Center.
Additionally, volunteers will be welcomed to help with collections, Moniz said.
“We’re going to need help” at Safeway, the Kukui Grove Center and at Ishihara Market, Moniz said.
“People can call 246-3809, ext. 102, to sign up as volunteers, or to get more information.”
Moniz said the goal of the one-day drive is $10,000 and 4,000 pounds of food which will support the different KIFB programs including the Electronics Benefits Transfer program, the Back Pack program for keiki, the Keiki Cafe program and its Emergency Food Distribution.
The mission of the food bank is to “Prevent hunger, provide nutritious food for the hungry and respond to emergencies.”
Demand for food has more than doubled from 58,000 requests for food in 2008 to almost 120,000 pounds in 2010, based on The Hunger Study.
In the same period, food distribution has increased from 483,679 pounds in 2008 to more than 730,000 in 2010.
Described as the smallest food bank in the state, but feeding the largest percentage of the county’s population, the KIFB remains committed to feeding Kaua‘i’s hungry, especially its children and elderly.
