LIHU‘E — A Kilauea man was sentenced to 14 days jail and to residential drug and alcohol treatment for probation violations.
William Patrick Ellis, 43, of Kilauea, was in 5th Circuit Court on Thursday, after turning himself in for drinking alcohol, a violation of the terms of probation. The violations also included a late appearance for a group meeting and not showing up for a drug test.
Second Deputy County Prosecuting Attorney Samuel Jajich said three new violations bring the total to six. He noted a lack of severity of the violations and recommended the two-week jail stay and to keep the defendant in the HOPE probation program.
State Deputy Public Defender Stephanie Sato said Ellis took it upon himself to turn himself in and is attempting to enter a residential treatment program.
Chief Judge Randal Valenciano of the 5th Circuit told Ellis that he was racking up violations that threaten his probation. He said Ellis is closer to the end that to the beginning, and that continued violations risk a revocation and a possible prison sentence.
In June 2008, Ellis was sentenced to five year’s probation and credit for time served. He was ordered to pay $8,620 in restitution to the victim.
