HANALEI — The Hanalei Canoe Club topped the first three events of the Kaiola regatta to set the pace for the remainder of the day, finishing in front of the field with 322 points in Hanalei Bay Saturday.
Pu‘uwai Canoe Club, which trailed Hanalei in the first three events, the Girls 10 -and- Under, the Boys 10- and-Under and the Mixed 10 -and -Under, finished a close second place with 271 points, marred by two disqualifications while Hanalei fielded a perfect day with no DQs at the event hosted by the Garden Island Racing Canoe Association.
One of the Pu‘uwai miscues, coming in the Women Freshmen race, was costly as Hanalei finished third in the race, first being taken by the Kukui‘ula paddlers on a 7:32.25 run followed by Kaiola crossing on a 7:45.49 and Hanalei at 8:02.34.
Overall, Hanalei finished with 16 first finishes over 44 events, nine coming in Na Opio division while Pu‘uwai piled up eight first finishes, including one in Na Opio.
Third place honors went to Niumalu Canoe Club at 157 points, just 17 points ahead of Kaiola who finished with 140 points.
Other clubs in the field included Namolokama (85 points), Hokualele (74 points), Kukui‘ula (55 points), Koloa (37 points) and West (31 points).
The Hanalei Canoe Club will host the 27th Annual Tahiti Fete on Saturday starting at 9 a.m. at the historic Hanalei Pier on Hanalei Bay.
On tap for the day of fun is a quarter-mile six-man Outrigger Canoe Regatta with Hanalei Canoe Club providing canoes, paddles and an experienced steersman with trophies and medals being awarded to the top three crews in Men, Women and Mixed divisions.
Categories include Novice B, for anyone who has never paddled, Novice A for anyone who has paddled in Tahiti Fete for three or more years, Open for anyone who has paddled competitively within the last two years, or who is currently paddling with a canoe club, and Build-A-Boat which is a free-for-all any age or experience level, no restrictions.
Entry fee is $125 per crew, or $150 for late registration.
Registration will take place starting at 9 a.m. Saturday on the south side of the historic Hanalei Pier where the Hanalei Canoe Club will have a registration tent set up.
