NAWILIWILI — Registration for both the elementary and intermediate divisions of Kaua‘i Youth Football are still being accepted, said Brad Hiranaka Thursday.
Parent support and volunteers are also welcome for both the Lihu‘e and Kapa‘a program he said.
On the field, players in the elementary division, grades 4 through 6, and the intermediate division, grades 7 and 8, were busy working on conditioning drills at the Nawiliwili Park.
Currently, there are four teams in the KYF 2012 fall season, two in Kapa‘a and two in Lihu‘e.
The Kapa‘a Intermediate Na Koa and the Kapa‘a Jr. Warriors meet for practice Mondays through Fridays at the Kapa‘a Beach Park, Hiranaka said.
The Kaua‘i Little Bulldogs and the Kaua‘i Intermediate Bulldogs meet at the Nawiliwili Beach Park for practice, Thursday’s conditioning being done amidst sprinklers.
“We’re trying to soften up the ground, because there hasn’t been that much rain,” Hiranaka said. “Next week, we start practice with helmets.”
Players interested in playing for the league can visit www.kauaiyouthfootball.com for more information and registration forms, Hiranaka said.
“Right now, we don’t take any high school students,” Hiranaka said. “Our oldest kids are eighth grade.”
Tentatively, Hiranaka said KYF has a full schedule ahead of them with teams from Halawa, Ko‘olau, Ewa Beach and the Pearl City Pride indicating a willingness to play the Kaua‘i teams.
“The only one which is firm is Waiana‘e and Kapolei who will each bring two divisions to Kaua‘i during the Oct. 28 weekend,” Hiranaka said.
In addition to practices and conditioning, which started July 23, Hiranaka said KYF will launch its fundraising efforts for the fall season starting Monday with kalua pig sales.
Proceeds will help fund the fall season, which will be highlighted during the Nov. 23 weekend.
“We’re planning on taking four teams to the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association football playoffs, play games on Saturday, take in the University of Hawai‘i game that night and play another game Sunday before coming home,” Hiranaka said. “That is a lot of football.”
