KALAHEO — Maui will be fielding a girls basketball team when the 9th annual Girls Kaua‘i Invitational basketball tournament unfolds starting Thursday at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Coached by Donald Shepherd and Mat Weeks, the Valley Isle girls hoops team will join the Kaua‘i Ballers, coached by Cecil Gee, Kaulupono, coached by Bobby Kamakele, and Team Lihu‘e with Coach Teresa Gonsalves in the three-day tournament which opens at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Tournament coordinator Karen Matsumoto of the Kaua‘i Youth Basketball Association said originally there were two Maui teams scheduled to participate, but at the final moment, the second Maui team could not field enough players to make the trip.
Kaulupono will open the tournament against Team Lihu‘e followed by the Kaua‘i Ballers taking on Maui in the nightcap Thursday.
Friday night, Kaua‘i Ballers takes on Kaulupono in the 6 p.m. opener followed by Team Lihu‘e meeting Maui in the nightcap starting at 7 p.m.
Saturday games start at 9 a.m. with the championship match scheduled to tip off at noon at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
There is no admission to view the competition in the round robin tournament where each team will play at least four games.
The win-loss record following the third game Saturday determines seeding with a head-to-head, least points allowed and most points scored being tie-breakers.
