The public is invited to join the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League in celebrating its 50th anniversary during the annual Jamboree Saturday at the Vidinha Stadium.
Admission to the day-long event honoring the founders of the Pop Warner program on Kaua‘i is $3 for adults and $2 for children aged 5 to 17 years old. Children 4 years old and younger are admitted free.
A food booth will be hosted by the KPWFL.
The KPWFL officially launched its island-wide program Aug. 1 where players and cheer squad members could begin their training and conditioning ahead of the tackle football season, which will be previewed by a slate of games following the formal opening ceremonies.
During this time, players worked through conditioning drills and basic fundamentals, highlighted by a special first-time, day-long drill led by former Kaua‘i High School football coach Darrell Borrero and KPWFL Commissioner Teddy Arroyo.
Saturday, the annual parade of floats, each being hosted by one of the five Kaua‘i associations, will be resurrected with an honoree riding the float.
The parade is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. from the historic County Building, making its way on Rice Street and onto Ho‘olako Street, ending at Vidinha Stadium where the formal ceremonies will begin.
To accomodate the parade, streets along the parade route will be closed from 7:30 a.m., states a county press release.
Road closures will include Eiwa Street between Hardy and Rice streets, Rice Street from Haleko Road to Ho‘olako Street, and Ho‘olako Street from the south stadium entrance to Rice Street.
Kaua‘i Police Department officers will monitor the closures until the parade is over.
Harold Naumu, Richard “Dick” Ueoka, Maxie Moreno and Stupe Shimogawa will be honored during the formal celebration.
Additionally, Tom Harper and Allan DeSilva, both of the Kapa‘a association, and Holly Camara of the Kekaha association will be recognized.
Millie Ah-Hee, earlier this year being recognized for her work as the Scholastic Coordinator by the National Pop Warner program, will present the annual scholastic awards before the day-long series of games take the field, preceded by the combined cheer squads of all associations doing two presentations, a result of their weekend cheer camp earlier in the summer.
Teams on the field include the Mitey Mites, Junior Pee Wee and Junior Midgets with games starting at 10:30 a.m. and the final game starting at 7:30 p.m.
Associations making up the KPWFL, led by president Pam Arroyo, include Kapa‘a, Lihu‘e, Koloa, Hanapepe and Kekaha.
