NA PALI – Rescue teams were busy Sunday. An injured hiker from Kapa‘a was airlifted from the Na Pali Coast late Sunday morning, according to a county press release. And later in the afternoon, an injured teen was airlifted from Ho‘opi‘i Falls.
In the first incident, a 62-year-old man was hiking on the Kalalau Trail at around 11 a.m. when he slipped and fell and hurt his head about 1⁄4 mile from Hanakapi‘ai Beach.
The incident was reported to lifeguards at the Ke‘e tower by hikers who came off the trail. One of the lifeguards rode in on a Jet Ski and two firefighters from the Hanalei station hiked in to assess the situation.
Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 flew to the injured hiker and long-lined him to the Ke‘e landing zone, according to the release. The man was then placed in Air 1 and transported to Princeville Airport where medics and Engine 8 were awaiting the man’s arrival. From there, the injured hiker was transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital. His condition was not known.
In the second incident, a 15-year-old Kapa‘a teen was airlifted from the bottom of Ho‘opi‘i Falls in Kapahi Sunday afternoon after he fell about 30 feet from a nearby ridge.
The Kapa‘a teen and a friend were riding mountain bikes at approximately 2:41 p.m. when the incident occurred, according to the county news release.
Personnel from the Kaiakea station were the first to respond. Due to the rough terrain and distance to the injured teen, Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 also responded and airlifted the teen to Kapahi Park. From there, awaiting medics transported the injured teen to Wilcox Memorial Hospital. His condition was not known.
