‘ELE‘ELE — The 5th annual Never Forget Sandy G Golf Tournament benefits the YWCA of Kaua‘i programs, which work to end violence against women and children.
The annual three-person modified scramble golf tournament, which helps keep the memory of Sandra Mendonca Galas alive, will be held Aug. 19 at the Kaua‘i Lagoons Golf Club with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. and an awards luncheon to follow.
Galas was found murdered in her car on Jan. 25, 2006.
Six years has passed and no arrests have been made in connection to this crime.
“Her family and friends want us to ‘Never Forget Sandy G’ and asked the YWCA to name our annual fundraising event in her honor,” said Renae Hamilton, YWCA executive director, in a letter. “Last year, the Never Forget Sandy G golf tournament hosted 80 players and raised more than $10,000 for YWCA programs.”
Hamilton said the programs at the YWCA assist victims of violence through its recovery and healing. Other programs help educate and prevent violence and substance abuse.
“Sandra’s family has asked the YWCA to help keep the memory of her alive and to bring awareness of our collective need to end violence against women,” Hamilton said. “The YWCA is proud to support the family’s request again this year.”
The YWCA of Kaua‘i is the sole provider of domestic and sexual violence services for victims and offenders, states a Sandy G golf flier. It also provides counseling, education and advocacy to aid in the healing and prevention of violence in our homes and community.
“And remember, Sandy’s murder remains unsolved,” Hamilton said. “If you have any information regarding this crime, please call the Kaua‘i Police Deptartment at 241-1696.”
