LIHU‘E – County officials announced Thursday that changes have been made to the traffic pattern by Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School due to concerns about pedestrian safety, according to a news release.
Motorists are urged to exercise caution while driving through the area.
The most significant change is the conversion of the Nuhou Road and Kaneka Street junction to a three-way stop. Drivers heading in either direction on Nuhou Road must now come to a complete stop. Northbound motorists on Kaneka Street must also come to a complete stop at the crosswalk just before the junction as well as at the crosswalk at the junction.
Signage depicting the new traffic pattern was installed this week including: new stop signs; stop bars; and stop-ahead signs.
The changes were implemented in response to a recent accident in the area where a pedestrian in a marked crosswalk was struck by a vehicle.
