LIHU‘E — The Department of Land and Natural Resources is reminding the public that a high fire danger still exists in portions of Koke‘e.
An initial closure declaration was issued in early June, and the lands were increased to include Hunting Units A and J after the fire in early July. In a Wednesday press release, the DLNR said that in the interest of public safety, a subsequent closure declaration is now in effect for portions of Na Pali-Kona and Pu‘u Ka Pele Forest Reserves.
Miloli‘i Ridge Road of Hunting Unit H – Na Pali-Kona FR will remain closed to vehicle and horseback use until conditions improve, according to DLNR. Hunters are permitted to access Miloli‘i Ridge Road via foot only with no exceptions.
Pine Forest Drive along the Makaha Ridge Road will remain open as scheduled. Nualolo, Nualolo Cliff and ‘Awa‘awapuhi trails will also remain open for use.
The high fire danger closure declaration will restrict the goat and deer hunting seasons in Units A and J.
Access to Units A and J portions of the Pu‘u Ka Pele FR, Kekaha Game Management Area and Waimea Canyon State Park will remain closed until conditions improve and the high fire danger closure declaration has been canceled.
All other Hunting Units including B, C, D, E, F, G and K will remain open as scheduled and will not be affected by the closure declaration.
The trout fishing at the Pu‘u Lua Reservoir will remain open until Sept. 30. After that date, access to the reservoir will be closed until further notice.
