PO‘IPU — You don’t have to be a pop star to do the moon walk. The Hawai‘i Chapter of Sierra Club, Kaua‘i Group, is hosting a moon walk at Maha‘ulepu today, starting at 3:30 p.m.
“This is the best hike you can do on Kaua‘i,” Kaua‘i Group Outings Chair Judy Dalton said.
The hike begins at Shipwreck’s Beach, by the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Po‘ipu. From there, the participants go through a slow-paced walk through fairly leveled terrain leading to Maha‘ulepu.
“It’s not a race to get to Maha‘ulepu,” Dalton said. The groups often stops to appreciate the views and enjoy the nature, on a hike lasts approximately two hours.
“Children just love this hike,” said Dalton, adding that children as young as 5 years old have participated.
She asks people to bring snacks for dinner, a sunvisor or sunglasses, a flashlight and wear comfortable walking shoes. As long as sandals have back straps it’s OK, she said.
“It’s a good idea to bring a rain jacket in case it rains,” Dalton said.
Everyone who has been on the hike, she said, you can see the change in their face.
“They say, ‘Oh my God, I’ve just experienced the best hike of my entire life,’” Dalton said.
At the end of the hike, everyone is shuttled back to Shipwreck’s Beach. Dalton said it’s all over at approximately 8 p.m.
The hike is free, but Dalton said a small donation to Sierra Club is appreciated.
The Sierra Club’s mission is to explore, enjoy and protect the wild places of the Earth, Dalton said.
“When we connect with nature, we appreciate it, and that compels us to take responsibility to protect it,” she said. “We’ve been privileged to lead hundreds of hikes to waterfalls, rivers, forests, mountains and coastlines, conduct service trips and beach clean ups on Kauai for over 30 years.”
