HANAPEPE — Friday night at Hanapepe could be described as a battle of wills as the Waimea Menehune hosted the Kapa‘a Warriors. The Warriors came in as heavy favorites against the 0-1 Menehune, however Waimea would not roll over lightly as it became a knock-down, drag-out defensive battle in which the Menehune clawed its way to a 14-7 thrilling victory.
Waimea got a big game on offense from running back Kyren Rapacon with 140-yards rushing and defensive back Destin Miguel lead the charge on defense for the Menehune with a crucial fourth quarter interception and a game-changing 90-yard kickoff return for touchdown.
The win put the Waimea Menehune with a 1-1 record on the season, and changes the balance of KIF football as now, Kapa‘a, Kaua‘i and Waimea are tied with a 1-1 record.
Waimea is set for a rematch next week as they host the Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders on Sept. 22 at 4:30 p.m.
The Red Raiders beat Waimea in the opener 24-7.
The Kapa‘a Warriors get a week off as they prepare for its rematch against Kaua‘i on Sept. 29 at 4:30 p.m.
