NAWILIWILI — Fast Company was first across the line during the opening race of the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Gene Wells Memorial Series Thursday.
But Fast Company, staying in the lead through most of the race, crossed the line on a 1:11:06 elapsed sail before a throng of spectators which crowded the jetty wall area.
The crossing, just about a minute faster than Papa‘au, carefully tended its course back of the leaders, Fast Company and OZone, in 10 to 15-knot winds out of the northeast.
“This was a good race,” said Sharon Gibson, the NYC scorekeeper. “There was good wind, a good group of spectators and the boats were all pretty close together.”
On the correction, Papa‘au soared to the lead, correcting to 1:08:55 PHRF over Fast Company’s correction to 1:11:13 PHRF.
OZone, one of the early leaders, ran into trouble with her jib set on the last mark before the finish, setting her back to a 1:17:15 elapsed sail and correcting to 1:17:34 PHRF for fourth place below Bonjolea, which crossed at 1:15:35 elapsed sail and corrected to 1:12:41 PHRF for third place.
Coyote, a C&C 38, crossed five minutes back of OZone at 1:22:49 and corrected to 1:17:34 PHRF, missing fourth place by 12 seconds on the correction. She also corrected to 1:07:02 Club for top honors in that class.
Weatherly (1:17:48 elapsed, 1:17:55 PHRF) and Lelele, the only Gene Wells boat in the race, crossed at 1:18:56 elapsed and corrected to 1:18:41 PHRF to round out the field.
With seven races in the series, one race gets to be thrown out for final consideration, Gibson said.
The next race takes place Thursday and the public is invited to view the action in this final series for the NYC year. First flags fly at 5 p.m. For more information visit www.nawiliwiliyachtclub.org.
