HANAPEPE — The Hanapepe Colts split its series with the Kekaha Titans, both games being settled in the first half, and in the afternoon series, the host Koloa Redskins finished with two wins in three matches against the Kapa‘a Eagles in Saturday’s Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League action at Hanapepe Stadium.
This week’s games move to Vidinha Stadium with six games on tap starting at 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
Mitey Mite: Kekaha 25, Hanapepe 7
Kekaha Titan Hayden Oglesby marked two second-quarter touchdowns to lead the Titans to its 25-7 win over the Colts in the day’s opener.
Following two first quarter Kekaha scores by Junior Agemoto, one coming on a 47-yard scamper to paydirt at the 6:51 mark and the other emerging after Agemoto snared a 36-yard scoring pass from Anson Lazaro at the 2:23 mark, Oglesby made his mark in the second period.
With 7:55 showing in the half, Oglesby broke out for 50 yards and the score, Barak Aviguetero running in the point after, the first successful one in the game, for the 19-0 bulge.
Just about a minute later, Oglesby struck again, stripping the ball and recovering the errant pigskin for a 57-yard charge to paydirt.
But the Colts answered on the ensuing play, Hanapepe quarterback Rayson Ruiz finding the end zone on a 35-yard run and Malu Campos Banasihan taking the ball in for the point-after in the 25-7 final.
JPW Hanapepe 36, Kekaha 0
Hanapepe’s Ryan “Rhino” Banasihan scored two touchdowns within a minute of each other to lead the Colts to its 36-0 shutout of the Kekaha Titans in Junior Pee Wee action.
Banasihan found the end zone on a 33-yard scoot with 3:20 showing in the first period and followed that score at the 2:21 mark on a 41-yard breakout, Noah Ruiz doing the point-after boot following each score for the quick 16-0 lead.
With just 15 ticks peeled off the second quarter, Ruiz marked his own touchdown, a 25-yarder with Naikoa “Spanky” Simao running in the point-after-touchdown for the 23-0 read.
Makoa Vanaman plowed up the middle in traffic for the one-yard TD, which came with 1:52 showing in the half, the score triggering the running clock.
Isahn Ulanday marked the final Colt TD in the third period after hitting paydirt on a six-yard run, Kanaan “Bulla” Ephan running in the point-after-touchdown for the 36-0 final.
JPW: Koloa 6, Kapa‘a 8
A missed point-after by the Koloa Redskins proved to be the margin of victory for the Kapa‘a Eagles who came from behind in the first quarter for the 8-6 win.
Kawelo Huddy put Koloa on the boards first, striking at the 6:43 mark with a nine-yard scoring run, the point-after failing.
Just about a minute later, the Eagles answered the score when Ezekiel Anakalea broke out for a 53-yard touchdown, gracing the score by kicking the point-after for the win.
MM: Koloa 14, Kapa‘a 12
Braden Galas had a key fumble recovery and a successful point-after and Redskins’ quarterback Kahanu Davis scored a touchdown and ran in a point-after to lead Koloa to a two-point edge over the Kapa‘a Eagles, previewing an afternoon of close games.
Galas opened up the scorebooks midway through the opening frame with a fumble recovery and a 45-yard runback for the first score, Davis gracing the TD with the point-after-touchdown run-in.
Kapa‘a answered the score on the ensuing drive, Chasen Tumamao finding the end zone following a 34-yard run at the 2:45 mark. The point-after-touchdown failed for the 7-6 Koloa edge, which remained through the half.
With just 44 ticks remaining in the third period, Davis kept the pigskin and opened up for a 92-yard score, Galas running in the point-after for the 14-6 margin.
As the clock wound down, Tumamao pulled Kapa‘a back into the game at the 3:52 mark on a 23-yard scoring run. But the point-after failed for the 14-12 final in favor of the Redskins.
JM: Koloa 14, Kapa‘a 6
Kapa‘a’s Palenapa Likelio broke a defensive slugfest with 2:11 left in the first quarter to get the Eagles on the scoreboard with an 87-yard scoring run, the point-after failing.
Koloa answered in the second period with 1:38 showing in the half when quarterback Brayden Miyamoto found Kahekili Kelekoma in the end zone with a 17-yard scoring pass, Kelekoma breaking the 6-6 deadlock by booting the point-after for the 8-6 bulge at the half.
Noah Thompson capped the Koloa win in the third period, finding the end zone following a six-yard charge.
The point-after failed for the 14-6 final.
The Koloa Mitey Mites take on the Kekaha Titans in the 7:30 a.m. opener Saturday at Vidinha Stadium followed by Hanapepe matching up with Kekaha in the Unlimited division at 9 a.m. The Colts wrap up the morning action when its JPW squad meets the Redskins starting at 11 a.m.
Kapa‘a Eagles host the afternoon series, its JPW meeting the Lihu‘e Patriots at 1 p.m. followed by the Junior Midget game at 3 p.m. and the Mitey Mites closing the day starting at 5 p.m.
