LIHU‘E — We could have had a different outfit for this, said one of Kaua‘i Police Department officers Tuesday under sunny skies.
The officers were part of the contingent joining Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. in the first of eight Walk and Talk Story with the Mayor lunchtime walks hosted by the County of Kaua‘i, the Lihu‘e Business Association and Get Fit Kaua‘i.
Guests for the inaugural walk included members of KPD, the Kaua‘i Fire Department, with Chief Robert Westerman, and Kaua‘i Civil Defense.
“I won’t be here for the first couple of walks,” said Bev Brody of Get Fit Kaua‘i, late last week. “But when I get back, I’ll be there.”
Instead, Pat Griffin of LBA kept up with Carvalho, who led the group from the rotunda of the Mo‘ikeha Building at the Lihu‘e Civic Center down Rice Street to Ho‘olako Street, where the group crossed Rice Street for the return trip to the Lihu‘e Civic Center, a nice walk of just under an hour.
Although this was the route for the inaugural walk, organizers said the routes may vary.
The public is invited to join the series of eight walks, which take place each Tuesday through Oct. 30 starting at 11:30 a.m.
Walkers are invited to meet in the rotunda of the Mo‘ikeha Building, also known as the Round Building, where Carvalho will lead off the walk.
Walkers are encouraged to wear good walking shoes, bring water, apply sunscreen before walking, wear a hat and obey all traffic signals along the route.
Organizers said this event is an opportunity to get some exercise while being able to talk story with the mayor and other community leaders in an informal setting.
Other leaders joining Carvalho include the Kaua‘i District Health Office on Sept. 18, Ho‘ola Lahui Hawai‘i on Sept. 25, the LBA and Rice Street businesses and agencies on Oct. 2, the Boys and Girls Club on Oct. 9, the Kaua‘i Chamber of Commerce on Oct. 16 and the Kaua‘i school principals on Oct. 23.
Oct. 30 is the final walk and falls on the eve of Halloween, so it’s anybody’s guess on who the surprise walker will be on that date.
For individuals requiring additional support, or an auxiliary aid to participate, call the mayor’s office at least 10 working days prior to the event at 241-4900.
Call Griffin at 639-1019 or Brody at 212-4765 for additional information on the weekly walks.
