LIHU‘E — Representatives from Kaua’i’s Cold Case Murder Unit will attend the 25th invitation-only Colonel Henry F. Williams Homicide Seminar next week in Albany, New York, according to a county news release.
This is an opportunity for members of Hawai‘i’s first prosecutor-directed cold case murder unit, Ke Ahi Pio‘ole, to consult with forensic investigation experts from around the world.
Ke Ahi Pio‘ole translates as “the fire that never burns out.” It was established in May to include attorneys from the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney and investigators of the Kaua‘i Police Department.
The unit was developed to revisit unsolved cases using advance techniques in DNA technology, evidence collection and forensic science. The unit is supported by nearly $100,000 in competitive funding from Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant.
Unit members attending the seminar include Prosecuting Attorney Shaylene Iseri-Carvalho, First Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jake Delaplane, Acting Lieutenant James Rodriguez and Detective Daniel Oliveira from the KPD Investigative Services Bureau.
The annual seminar includes training on the application of forensic science to death investigations. Instruction is provided by field experts, including the investigators of the BTK killer, Craigslist killer and London Bombing cases.
