LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i Police Department Lt. Paul Applegate and sergeants Rod Green and Chris Calio ascended the rooftop of the Walmart store atop a Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative lift, Friday morning.
The three police officers launched the annual Cop on Top fundraiser for the Special Olympics Kaua‘i fundraiser, vowing to remain on the roof through Sunday afternoon, or until they raise a minimum of $25,000.
Shelly Gerardo of the Special Olympics Kaua‘i said this is the first time on the rooftop for the three officers and are asking people to come and visit the officers who will remain on the rooftop for three days and two nights to help raise funds for the Special Olympics athletes.
This year’s fundraiser is being sponsored by Falko Partners, Walmart, Ka‘iwa Construction and the Kukui‘ula Development Co.
Shoppers contributing $5 or more toward the goal will receive a special logo gift item while supplies last and be eligible for the drawing of a $50 Walmart gift card.
Additionally, other premium logowear are available in exchange for contributions.
Donations can also be done online by visiting www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/sokauai2012/cop-on-top-kauai with all donations being secure. A message can also be provided with the contribution.
Gerardo said with more children joining Special Olympics Kaua‘i each year, and the programs for athletes being funded solely by fundraising efforts, Special Olympics Kaua‘i needs help more than ever.
Special Olympics’ mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, allowing them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience you and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympic athletes and the community.
