LAWA‘I — The crowd surged early Sunday at the gates to the Lawa‘i Cannery Self Storage garage sale.
The garage sale benefited the Waimea High School girls volleyball program and Lorna Santos of the Lawa‘i Cannery Self Storage said vendor space was sold out with about 45 vendors participating in the popular community event.
“We had to be here at 6:15 in the morning,” said Kawena Warren, the middle blocker for the Waimea volleyball team, as she pleaded a sale for the last remaining shopping bag.
The Waimea girls volleyball team had just completed the first round of the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girls volleyball season by defeating Kapa‘a, 3-0, Friday night at the Bernice Hundley Gym to keep an undefeated record intact.
“A lot of the girls were also doing a service project Saturday,” said Chad Delanoza, head coach. “The girls were doing a beach clean up in Waimea. We have to give back, too. It’s not just going out to get help.”
Others were participating in the KIF cross country race Saturday, adding to their long weekend schedule of activities.
Santos said vendor reservations for the next Lawa‘i Cannery Self Storage garage sale are already being accepted for the Nov. 18 event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., which will benefit the St. Theresa School Washington Experience.
“This is not for the church,” Santos said. “This sale benefits the St. Theresa School and their trip to Washington.”
Since its inception several years ago, the Lawa‘i Cannery Self Storage garage sales have proven to be well received by shoppers and the community.
During the sale, the benefactor receives the reservation fees as well as a space so it is able to vend items to benefit its own program.
Over the years, several community organizations have benefited from the sale, including the Special Olympics Kaua‘i who will be hosting its annual Cop on Top starting Friday through Sunday at Walmart, the Easter Seals of Hawai‘i, Kaua‘i Chapter, who was the recipient of a Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation grant for $10,000 through the efforts of the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i “Friends” project, Saturday, and many others including the FIRST Kaua‘i Robotics program, project GRAD programs and other community organizations.
Several of the vendors have become regulars during the sale, including the Oyamot family who had a line of camouflage clothing, now that the camouflage shop on the Westside is closed.
Others include Stel Pimental who had her grandchild acting as “security” while her daughter-in-law kept an eye on the browsing taking place at the clothing racks.
Sharmaine Simao, who holds a “day job” at Volvo Rents, relies on items “found” in their cleaning business for inventory and Arthur Brun is adding to his offerings of smoked meat and sausage with some cutlery.
Fred Zollinger, a wood artist who maintains a workshop across the street, has become a regular shopper, noting he might set up a small work station at his workshop to add flavor to the busy event.
