In a concealed corner inside the Puhi Industrial Complex lies one of Kaua‘i’is favorite food destinations: Mark’s Place.
Although Mark’s Place is concealed in an obscure corner of town, it is always packed with people from one end of the property to the other; they are magnetically drawn to this hidden gem in Puhi.
I can’t really blame them. The tasty dishes at Mark’s Place is something special: It is a treasure trove of local-style food that will blow your taste buds to kingdom come.
Mark’s Place opened up in 1998 when Mark and Wendy Oyama decided to branch out from their catering business. The food they catered was so delicious and so popular that they were forced to open Mark’s Place in order to fulfill the needs of hungry consumers.
“We’ve been busy since day one,” said Wendy Oyama, part owner and manager at Mark’s Place.
“We opened up the take-out in order to use the leftovers from the catering side, but Mark’s Place just grew and grew and grew.”
As busy as Mark’s Place is, Wendy emphasized that the catering side is just as busy: cooking the orders at the restaurant, traversing throughout the island and serving primarily at destination weddings.
“Our workers work so hard,” Wendy said. “They work in the restaurant on the weekdays, then cater on the weekends.”
The food at Mark’s Place is a local array of top notch island flavor. Among its popular takeout dishes are Mark’s Famous Mixed Plate priced at $8.95, the two and three choice combo plates priced at $9 and $9.50 and the Pau Hana dinner special which varies in price daily.
Mark’s Famous Mixed Plate is an assorted blend of three local favorites: chicken katsu, teriyaki beef and beef stew.
The special combo plate also comes with your choice of white or brown rice and salad.
If the famous mixed plate doesn’t tickle your fancy, the combination plates will win your heart.
You have your choice of combining beef stew, hamburger steak, loco moco, teriyaki chicken, chicken cutlet, chicken katsu, Korean chicken or Teriyaki beef. Choose between two or three choices.
If you and your family is on the go and can’t find the time to cook a hearty meal, then the Pau Hana special (served after 4 p.m.) is for you.
Prices for this special meal varies daily, so keep your eye out for changes.
When Kaua‘i Times visited Mark’s Place, the special that day was Pelehu style chicken, steamed white rice, tossed green and peach cobbler pie priced at $37.50. This massive meal feeds four people.
Mark’s Place, although in an obscure part of town, really isn’t hidden. Just ask anyone from Kaua‘i if they’ve been to Mark’s Place. Chances are they’ll say of course. The food is delicious, and it is a testimony to the long lines seen at Mark’s Place daily.
If you haven’t tasted the Korean chicken or the beef stew before, I suggest you get on that now. Mark’s Place, located on 1610 Haleukana St. in Lihu‘e at the Puhi Industrial Park, is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
