Maka Viernes of Hanama‘ulu is attending Hampshire College, beginning the fall semester of 2012. She is the daughter of Danilo M. Viernes and Kathleen J. Viernes.
Hampshire College is a liberal arts college of 1,500 students, each of whom pursues a personalized program of interdisciplinary study that the student works with professors to help build. Hampshire is a member of the Five College consortium (Hampshire, Amherst, Smith and Mt. Holyoke Colleges and the University of Massachusetts Amherst).
WSU announces summer 2012 graduates
Two Washington State University students from Kaua‘i have earned undergraduate degrees for the summer 2012 semester. They are Noah Tamio Imai, Bachelor of Science in Biology, from Kapa‘a and Nicole Lee Cristobal, Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, from Lihu‘e.
Aguilar earns AMRA scholarship
Kimberly Aguilar, a graduate of Waimea High School, has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship by The American Military Retirees Association.
Aguilar plans to study Exercise Science at Hardin-Simmons University in the fall semester, states an AMRA release.
Through the Sergeant Major Douglas Drum Memorial Scholarship program, AMRA, in 2012, awarded scholarships totaling $35,000 to AMRA members, their spouses, dependent children or grandchildren for undergraduate study at two- or four-year accredited, degree-granting institutions.
Scholarship recipients must be sponsored by an AMRA member.

The American Military Retirees Association was founded in Saranac Lake, New York in 1973 with a focus of “retirees serving retirees.”
Eligibility for the association includes military retirees, Guardsmen and Reservists, medically retired and 100 percent service-connected and surviving spouses.
