NAWILIWILI — An anonymous donor has pledged to match any contribution of $150 or more Saturday when the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank hosts its annual Holiday Food Collection Day at various locations island-wide.
Frank Ranger, director of the KIFB, said this is a great way for an individual’s contribution to make an even bigger difference.
“If you give $150, with the two-for-one match, the contribution results in $450 available to help feed Kaua‘i’s hungry,” Ranger said. “Additionally, the donor will honor contributions up until Oct. 15.”
The Holiday Food Drive will take place at the Ching Young Village in Hanalei, the Foodland store in Princeville plus multiple sites at Kukui Grove Center, including the Big Kmart store and the fountain area fronting Starbuck’s Coffee.
Sueoka’s in Koloa is the South Shore collection point, and Ishihara Market in Waimea is the Westside collection point.
Other sites include the Kapa‘a Shopping Center where Times Big Save is located, the Foodland store in Waipouli and Safeway at the Kaua‘i Village.
All collection points will be accepting contributions from 9 a.m. through 3 p.m.
Kelvin Moniz, the food resources director at KIFB, said volunteers are needed to help man the Ching Young Village, Safeway and Foodland in Waipouli sites.
Other volunteers will be coming from the Church of the Pacific, the Kalaheo Missionary Church and the Lions Clubs.
He said in addition to the contributions to the Holiday Food Drive, which runs from Oct. 6 through Dec. 31, contributions of turkeys to help the hungry during the holidays are also appreciated.
During the Holiday Food Drive, people can drop off healthy, non-perishable food items at any of the fire stations located on the island, or at the KIFB facility in Nawiliwili.
Among the most requested nutritious food are brown and hapa (white/brown mixed) rice, canned soups, canned vegetables, canned tuna, Pediasure and Ensure, pasta, peanut butter and canned foods.
