PO‘IPU — Kengo Aoshima teamed with Hana Furuichi to fire an even par 72, pushing ahead of the team of Shawn Lu and Aiko Leong to win the Hawai‘i State Junior Golf Association 2012 Mixed Team Championship Sunday at the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course.
Both teams finished with a 5-under par 67 Saturday, the opening round of the 36-hole tournament, and on Sunday, the Furuichi-Aoshima team surged to an even par 72 in humid conditions eased somewhat by gentle tradewinds to finish with a 139 (67-72) for the win.
The Leong-Lu team dropped to a 3-over par 75 to finish with a two-day 142 (67-75) for the runner-up spot.
The Mixed Team Championship consisted of two-person teams, a boy and a girl from the 13-18 division. The first round, played Saturday, was played using Four-Ball Stroke Play with Sunday play being Foursome Stroke Play.
Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course played 6,117 yards for the girls and 6,499 yards for the boys.
Third place in the Mixed Team Championship went to Ciera Min of Hilo who teamed with Tyler Munetake of Maui to finish with a 146 (68-78) after finishing just a stroke off the pace Saturday.
Koloa’s Taylor Viquelia teamed with Bryden Salvador of Kilauea to end in a tie for fourth at 147 (73-74) with Randi Kim of Honolulu and Colby Takushi of Pearl City, O‘ahu (69-78-147).
Daezsa Tomas of Lihu‘e teamed with Kenji Miyata of Kapa‘a to end in sixth at 148 (71-77) followed by Zoey Akagi-Bustin of Wahiawa and Ariel Elftman-Hanson of Wailuku, Maui (70-80-150), Andi Igawa of Hilo and Lucas Park of Wailuku (70-81-151).
Maui golfers Kimberlie Miyamoto of Kahului and Justin Ngan of Wailuku filled in the No. 9 spot at 152 (73-79) followed by Kristen and Eric Le of Aiea (73-84-157) tying for 10th with Rosa-Alana Hi‘ilani of Lihu‘e teaming with Remington Hirano of Honolulu (70-87-157).
Trevor Kua of Lihu‘e teamed with Keilyn Ing of Honolulu for the No. 12 spot at 159 (74-85) followed by Nathaniel Idica of Wailuku, Maui teaming with Kirsten Ishikawa of Pukalani, Maui at 160 (77-83) and Hi‘ilani teaming with Tyler Barton of Princeville for a 175 (81-94).
The Mixed Team Championship helps prepare Hawai‘i Team members compete in the similar Ryder Cup format Asia Pacific Junior Cup being played against the top junior golfers from Japan during the 6th Annual Asia Pacific Junior Cup, which will play Nov. 1 through 3 at the Waikoloa Kings’ Course on the Big Island.
