Mayette Loseto said there are three types of (edible) ginger. She had samples of all three on Saturday at the Kaua‘i Community Market, noting the red is stronger than the white or yellow.
The white she refers to is the Chinese type, according to identification traits from the University of Hawai‘i College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, and the yellow, the hand being smaller than the white, is the Japanese type.
Mayette, who works at the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort and Spa, where they have one black ti leaf plant on property, said she discovered the black ti leaf plants being sold by Michael and Elsie Gregg of Ka‘apuni Nursery and got one (now there’s two left).
Sandi Kato-Klutke was in Lanai for a Hawai‘i Hotel and Lodging Association meeting so the Moloa‘a Bay Coffee truck was a little less busy, although a descendent of Kamehameha did stop by to tell John McClure how good the medium roast coffee was.
Speaking of coffee, Steven Matsumoto said he’s retired from the Koloa Coffee (grown and processed by Dennis Okihara of Obsessions Cafe who prepared lunch for the Dennis Agena basketball clinic).
