NAWILIWILI — The Kaua‘i Fire Department quickly put out a brushfire that broke out in Nawiliwili Sunday in the late afternoon.
“Even thought the fire was across the street from Garden Island Disposal, there were no buildings that were threatened,” County spokeswoman Sarah Blane said.
A brushfire was reported at 5:03 p.m. on an open field at Niumalu Road, across the street from Garden Island Disposal in Nawiliwili, according to Blane.
At 5:10 p.m., firefighters from Lihu‘e Fire Station, along with the station’s Rescue 3 special team, arrived at the scene. In 15 minutes the fire was out, and at 5:40 the firefighters left the scene, she said.
The fire was initially thought to be burning one acre. But once the fire was put out, and KFD was able to better assess the situation, the area affected turned out to be much smaller, about a quarter of an acre, Blane said.
