LIHU‘E — Doors to the annual Lihu‘e Christian Church 2012 Bazaar open at 9 a.m. and there is a line waiting to get in.
The event, a portion of which benefits the LCC Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and the ‘Ae Kamali‘i Preschool is open to both visitors and residents alike and offers a wide variety of foodstuff, local crafts, a silent auction, and usually, a good selection of handmade quilts which make ideal holiday gifts.
“It’s never too early to begin your Christmas shopping,” said Joy Miura Koerte of Fujita and Miura Public Relations, whose family is part of the LCC congregation.
On tap for the offerings are baked goods, many from family heirloom recipes, sushi, nishime, a Japanese style stew, assorted fresh produce, many coming from backyard gardens of LCC parishoners, quilts, plate lunches, and more.
Penny Taketa, director of the ‘Ae Kamali‘i Preschool, was one of the volunteers working to prepare ingredients for the many food offerings, Thursday night.
“We don’t usually use peelers,” Taketa said when directed to use a vegetable peeler to skin fresh carrots. “We do a lot of washing and scrubbing. I’ve got a bag to collect compostables, too.”
A lucky number drawing punctates the activity as the line disperses through the gates into the LCC social hall, shoppers already targeting specific areas of attack.
