It’s all in the latest episode of the popular adult cartoon show “South Park.”
For those who missed it, the “Going Native” episode features two of the show’s main characters, Butters and Kenny, on a trip to Kaua‘i and pokes a great deal of humor at the Garden Isle and its “native” inhabitants.
Like all others before it, the episode is, arguably of course, funny and perhaps controversial.
When Butters begins acting out at school, his parents realize it’s time to tell him why he’s not like all of the other children. He must travel to a foreign place, Kaua‘i, to learn the ways of his people.
Trey Parker, South Park’s co-creator, owns a home in Wailua, which helps explain the episode’s realism. His parents honeymooned at the Coco Palms Resort, destroyed by Hurricane ‘Iniki, and in 2009 Parker donated $20,000 to the Friends of Coco Palms, an ad-hoc steering committee dedicated to the acquisition of the dilapidated property for public benefit.
