LIHU‘E — With just one more regulation match on the schedule, a Waimea High School and Kaua‘i High School sweep set up an interesting scenario during the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation air riflery matches last Wednesday.
“We were just talking about a possible shoot off,” said Ian Verasammy, coach for the Kapa‘a High School teams, while briefing his wahine shooters.
Ross Shimabukuro, the Kaua‘i High School athletic director, said if the Red Raider boys win, they would pretty much secure the KIF title, but if the girls continue to win, and Waimea girls continue to win, there would be a shoot off taking place, possibly at Island School, a neutral range.
Victor Aguilar, the coach for Waimea High School, said there is a provision in the KIF calendar for the shoot off, scheduled for Oct. 17 at a site to be announced and starting at 3 p.m.
Kristyn Yamamotoya continued to set the pace for the Kaua‘i High School girls air riflery team, netting a 237 (95-62-80), including a whopping 95 points (out of a possible 100) in the prone position Thursday to lead the Red Raiders to an 1,127-967 win over the Kapa‘a girls.
Over at the Hanapepe Armory, the Menehune girls, led by the high pointing of Kayla Ishida and Jessica Tangalin, collected 1,162 points to the Island School girls’ 717 points, the Voyagers failing to field the five shooters needed for team scoring.
The boys’ team captain Matthew Kawamura was joined by Brandon Chun, netting 236 (93-66-77) and 235 (82-79-74), respectively to lead the Kaua‘i boys to an 1,146 showing.
Kapa‘a, being led by Kenneth Firestone (83-53-72-208) and Kalani Murakami (74-60-73-207), did not have enough shooters to post a team score.
Justin Pasadava (73-47-73-193) and Ka‘ana Aki (52-34-32-118) were the Warriors on the range.
Jaron Parongao and Sean Dela Cruz, finishing with just a point separating their scores, set the pace for the Waimea boys to finished with 1,119 points to Island School’s 1,069 showing, paced by Chad Andrade netting a 224 (80-69-75).
Following Kawamura and Chun, Kaua‘i got a 227 (72-71-84) from Hikari Oberman and a pair of 224’s, one by Brandon Iida (88-61-75) and one by Ryker Amimoto, in the second relay (92-62-70).
Colby Ihara-Takase (83-48-87-218), Alec Greer (77-62-78-217) and Matthew Nishimoto (79-51-74-204) were other Red Raiders on the range.
